Berzelius is one of the towering figures of 19th century chemistry, a man who helped to solidify Antoine Lavoisier’s vision of the elements and who worked to systematise chemistry at all Jöns Jacob Berzelius (1779–1848), who studied medi-cine at Uppsala in Sweden and in 1807 was appointed professor in chemistry and pharmacy at the Karolinska Institute (1). His fundamental contribution to the in-frastructure of chemistry was his role in the establish-ment of chemical terminology. To that end, he mastered traditional extractive analysis and published papers on these analyses between 1806 and 1808 that became highly regarded by his peers.

Around 1810 Berzelius was working to confirm John Dalton's atomic theory as well as Proust's law showing that separate elements always combined in whole-number proportions. Jacob Berzelius was one of the founders of modern chemistry. He was the first person to measure accurate atomic weights for the elements, which helped to confirm Dalton’s Atomic Theory and was the basis of Mendeleev’s periodic table. Abstract: Berzelius was one of the most prominent chemists of the 19th century; his scientific contributions were fundamental to the understanding of chemistry and the setting of standards for experimental work. He taught the chemical profession that chemistry should be conducted on a rigorous stoichiometric foundation. Berzelius is just one of many Swedish scientists that made a significant contribution in the area of discovering new elements. Of the 68 elements that were known in 1880, not less than 22 (or about 40%) were discovered in Sweden.Selenium.
